Today, I will share a story about my first published book, Looking for Mr. Potential, which came out in 2000.
Although I had written small stories as a kid, this was my first time exploring the world of book publishing. Upon discovering boutique publishers such as iUniverse, I risked all by publishing a story I had begun writing in high school.
This is where the learning begins. I didn’t have any help putting everything together, and of course, no editor, and boy did it show. The intriguing part is that the publisher let it go as is. I had no idea what to do for a cover, so one day I went to the mall to have a picture taken with my rent money. I came up with the concept. Boobs and money. I thought it was provocative. It was orange, with yellow font, and included boobs and money.

Of course, there were people who were upset at the poor spelling, etc. My mommy let me have it the most, but I understood. I had to do better, especially in the presentation.
This was also the only time I’ve ventured into the world of “romance fiction.” Although it is enjoyable to read these types of stories, I quickly discovered that this isn’t “my” thing. I aspired to expand my creativity and tackle unexpected stories. That meant walking away from the romance genre (because here is a confession: I don’t have much good luck or experience in that area). I put myself into subjects that shock, surprise, and, best of all, make people think. So, 14 years later, after some life experience, came Rude Boy USA, and the rest is history.
This story is raw and “hood” because that genre was hot in the early 2000s. It is a much different voice than the one I produced in the mid-2010s and a universe away from what I am producing now. As I release these stories, I observe their growth and maturity. I am overall pleased with the evolution. I hope readers are pleased too.
I will say that if you do decide to look at this story, keep an open mind and consider the context in which it was created.
This book is set in another universe and is not canon to my other works.
